on focal points

The themes of Christian Haake's pictorial objects are memory and imagination. His frame of reference is the external figurative world, or rather its remnants in the physical and in memory. Haake creates forms that are empty and full at the same moment. When looking at his works, one is often confronted with free surfaces and empty spaces. Yet his pictorial objects are never empty. The whitewashed surfaces of his wall objects show traces of their own production and their own transience. Architectural references can often be found. These pictures have a past, albeit an indeterminate one, their present seems precarious, their future is vague. In this way, they force us to make associations and lead us into the unknown. There are always hints of a real world. You try to focus on their points - but it seems to be in vain.
