Los Angeles is known for its special light. In the early 20th century, it lured film production companies from New York. In his print series LA Screens, Michael Schmid looks at images of the Southern California city and the light it produces. One sees shots of the sky above the city, - an image-formed sky of an image-formed city. A city like Los Angeles becomes an image here in the old-fashioned way on a postcard, showing it in the glare of the summer sun or illuminated by artificial light at night. Both are romantic views, sometimes bleached by the sun, sometimes turned into a negative by the artist. The preoccupation with the sky over LA continues, however: all object disappears in a light-intensive shot of the evening sky. Michael Schmid has here greatly enlarged the part of a color negative film; all available colors are found in it, blended into a brown. Here, as in all the other posters of the series, the dots become very visible. An entire city, and even the sky dissolve into these, here and there overlapping color dots. The posters were printed with frequency modulated screen. This means that the halftone dots are all the same size (but very small) and are distributed irregularly, chaotically on the printed sheet. Another shot shows very small but concrete in the middle of blue one of those police helicopters that are used to spy on the poor ghettos of the city. The Air Support Division (ASD) is the largest police force in the United States, and their aircraft are called Birds. They also make use of LA's besionder light and produce images of the city. The skies over LA are never real and not always friendly.
